Welcome to the Great Barrier MTB Marathon. This is a fun and challenging event open to anyone with a mountain bike. But you better do some training! Beginners, novices, veterans and elite riders are all invited to come out and enjoy a great weekend of riding/racing and exploring.
Race around a beautiful remote Island! The Great Barrier Island is in the Hauraki gulf 90k north east of central Auckland. This rugged unspolit island is a paradise in the ocean with large areas of native bush and amazing coastlines and beaches.
The Great Barrier Island MTB Marathon starts at the beautiful Medland beach campground on the east coast of the island.
Course details: All courses have a combination of Dirt roads, Sealed roads, Forest trails, 4WD trail and Single track. This course will put a big smile on your face.
The 80k is epic in its climbing/descending and variation of terrain and covers nearly all of the island. The 40k and 25k are also challenging and follow the first part of the 80k course.

Hi Anthony, Just thought I would drop you an email to let you know since I have been back at work how much I have been thinking of our weekend out on the island and how stoked we were on the whole event.
It was awesome being able to camp, meet and get to know like minded people in a relaxed awesome environment. Definitely something that you don't get to do in most other events where everyone just rocks up, races then bails for home again.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the course. It was by far the toughest (80k) race I have done, but a great mix of riding and scenery and such a wicked way to see the island, with some of the down hills and single track/ 4WD as good as it gets. Therefore I must thoroughly compliment you on such a fantastic event. Michael H
(From Megans Blog) ... I must admit I was slightly surprised by the amount of road that linked the mountain bike trails, but the trails were so awesome that the time spent on the road was not only worth it, but welcomed as a break and a chance to have a drink.
I'll be honest, I was here to win... And the last 2 weekends of racing made this a difficult task to remain focused on, but no matter how hard we were riding, it was impossible to ignore the amazing views surrounding us at every turn. Hard climbing was rewarded with stunning outlooks across Great Barrier Island and the trails were sweet... Rugged, untamed wilderness at it's best.
I must say, that although it wasn't the biggest race I've attended, the atmosphere was fantastic and it's definately well-worth doing. I think this race has the potential to be the next Colville and realistically, the travel is no issue if you're searching for a good race. I feel completely honoured to have taken the inaugural title and hope I'll follow it up again next year!
